Atmospheric Dynamics (Prof. Craig)

The uncertainty of forecasts

The Atmospheric Dynamics group focuses its research on an improvement of our understanding weather and climate predictions' uncertainties. Goal is a physics-based, quantitative probabilistic description of current and future atmospheric states. To this end, numerical experiments with meteorological models and theoretical methods from statistical physics are applied.

The working group is part of the Chair of Theoretical Meteorology (Prof. Craig).

Predictability / Ensemble-Prediction

How do forecast errors grow and how can one quantify this uncertainty?

Stochastic Parameterizations

We investigate how stochastic representations of physical processes can improve forecast quality.

Forecast Verification

We develop methods to quantify errors in high-resolution numerical weather forecasts.
