Potential links between tropospheric and stratospheric circulation extremes during early 2020

We study the connection between periods marked by extreme strength of the Atlantic jet and the stratospheric polar vortex during early 2020. Employing sets of numerical ensemble simulations we find the extreme vortex strength to be linked to the reflection of upward propagating planetary waves and a generally robust coupling between tropospheric and stratospheric anomalies: ensemble members with anomalously strong polar vortex tend to exhibit a stronger tropospheric jet and vice versa. Despite indications for vertical coupling, our simulations underline the role of internal variability within each atmospheric layer.
