Aerosol lidar comparison campaign of LMU and KIT in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

30.11.2025

A direct comparison campaign of aerosol high power lidar systems took place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from October to Novemebr 2025 in the framework of the ACTRIS project. The ACTRIS reference lidar POLIS was compared with the lidar system TONI, property of the KIT National Facility of ACTRIS. The systems were found to agree with differences up to 3% for the 1064 nm channels from 300 m up to 12 km, which is remarkable given that detection at 1064 tends to suffer from analog signal distortions and increased noise in the upper troposphere for most conventional aerosol lidars. A persistent stratospheric layer spanning up to 23 km and a transported tropospheric Saharan dust event have been recorded by both lidars. Analysis of the corresponding aerosol properties is still underway.
