18.05.2016

Buchan Prize of the Royal Meteorological Society for Prof. Roger Smith.

The Prize is awarded to the author of the paper or papers contributed to the Society journals in the previous five years, which shall be adjudged by the Council to contain the most important original contributions to meteorology.

"Roger Smith has been awarded the Buchan Prize for his fundamental contributions to our understanding of organized tropical convection and especially cyclones. From 2010 to 2015 Roger published 20 papers in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society on tropical cyclones, tropical convection, convergence lines, and the dynamics of heat lows. Many of these papers have challenged and revised held perceptions about tropical dynamics. This body of work is outstanding both in quality and quantity. All the papers involve 20 different colleagues. Roger has been the driving force behind them all."
